Buying a Barrel Race Horse
Buying a horse is real business and much different than buying a fish or small companion animal like dogs and cats. Aside from the initial expenses, there are other maintenance costs that are relatively involved that you'll want to plan for. This is why you must be very decisive when buying a horse, especially when you are interested in a horse for barrel racing competitions.
One of the major considerations when choosing a barrel horse is for speed. Barrel horse racing is all about speed, after all, that's how you'll win in barrel racing competitions!
There are horses that have temperament problems which are not limited to just barrel horses. Even some of the best horses in barrel racing can be tough to handle at time. Some horses can be very aggressive during the first barrel which leads to missing the angles that must be ideal to perform the cloverleaf-shaped pattern perfectly.
Other horses can be stubborn with following your commands and queues during the race. Still others can be timid at the end of the race which could then result to delayed acceleration towards the finish line. A slight delay for any reason while in the arena equals lesser points for your score. Be sure to check the temperament of the barrel race horse your interested in.
Another problem commonly encountered with horses is their tendency to become tired of training. Ask the seller of the horse to let you know about the horse's training habits and routine, such as how long they train for, what patterns they run, etc.
It's a good idea to allow time for the horse to adjust to your environment. Ideally, you would be able to have some of the same elements for the horse as the previous owner did, such as similar pens, barn, feed, etc. Ask the seller about the horse's usual surroundings so you can help the horse be as comfortable as possible.
Be sure to consider the price of the horse. Researching many horses and talking with many sellers can help you ensure you paid the best price for a barrel race horse and that you and the horse will be happy with each other!
