Breeds of Horses
There are many horse breeds, each offering their own unique traits. Here are just a few of the many breeds you may want consider (depending on your needs and preferences):
- Appaloosa: The Appaloosa horse is very colorful with its spots and splashes of color. Appaloosas compete in nearly all horse disciplines. From racing to dressage to reining and roping and more, these horses offer much versatility to horse owners. Their excited to please and friendly dispositions can make them a great match for Appaloosa horse owners. These horses can also make great family and kid horses.
- Clydesdale: These draft horses are known and bred for their tremendous working ability. Usually bay in color, Clydesdales are powerful horses that offer a variety of activities such as working, showing, or just to enjoy having around.
- Friesian: Known for their light agricultural work as well as for circus and in driving competitions, Friesian horses are typically 15 hands tall and have a great disposition. These horses have a noticeably long mane and tail that can reach the ground, as they are not trimmed.
- Miniature: Defined at being no more than 34 inches tall, the American Miniature horse are produced by selective breeding while keeping ideal confirmation. If space is a limitation, consider a miniature horse. They are easy to transport (sometimes in a station wagon, van or pickup) Sometimes, they are even boarded on airplane flights (in the cargo bay) as excess baggage.
- Paint Horse: The variety of colors and color patterns of paint horses make them a popular breed for horse owners. Along with their variety in appearance, Paint Horses also offer a fit for a variety of activities. A few of the common traits include riding for pleasure to showing to performing in rodeos to being a great kid horse.
- Quarter Horse: These horses were bred primarily in the Southern US states (Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico). Quarter horses are found in a variety of equine disciplines and activities, including in rodeos, working cattle, and even as a family (child friendly) horse. Quarter horses continue to have a strong history and is a popular breed for horse owners.
